Conductor
Ignace Thevelein (°1953) was ordained priest after having studied at the Lemmens Institute in Louvain and the major seminary in Bruges.
From 1978 till 1985 he studied at the Royal Music Conservatory in Ghent, where he achieved first prizes in solfège, harmony, music history and choir conducting. He took part in several perfection courses, amongst others with Laszlo Heltay, with Prof. Peter Erdey at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecs-kemét (Hungary) and with Frauke Haasemann at the Lehrgang für Chorleitung und Chorische Stimmbildung in Sankt-Moritz.
He also took part in the World Conference for Choral Music in Vienna. From 1986 till September 1995 he conducted the Beauvarlet Choir, with whom he received numerous prizes, made several performances at home and abroad, and also made cd-recordings.
He is the artistic leader of the International Bach Days, an organisation that manages courses and workshops on an annual basis for choral singers and conductors.
He is musical advisor and member of the committee for Choir and Voice, both nationally and for the department of West-Flanders. Ignace Thevelein teaches church music at the major seminary in Bruges. He is in charge of church music in the diocese of Bruges and of the cathedral of Our Saviour in Bruges. He founded the Bruges Cathedral Choir, which takes part in church ceremonies in the cathedral.
He published the book Officium and together with Piet Thomaes Geestelijk Liedboek van de Lage Landen (Book of Sacred Songs of the Low Countries) for publishing company Lannoo. For Averbode Press he published in co-operation with Jos Bielen Wieg hen in jouw eeuwigheid (Nurse them into Your Eternity), Maria is jouw naam (Mary is thy name) and Samuël-liedjes (Songs of Samuel). He also contributed to the new edition of Zingt Jubilate.
